In 1993, three men filed lawsuits alleging that Brother Gregory Atherton sexually abused them when they encountered him in their youth. Atherton allegedly abused boys at Servite High School in Anaheim, CA, where he served as a registrar from 1958-1967, as well as St. Philip Benizi Church in Fullerton, CA, where he served as music director from 1967-1968. Atherton also abused boys on trips to locations operated by his religious order, the Servites. According to the Servites, Atherton’s behavior was first reported in 1990, at which time he was sent to undergo counseling. As of 2005, the Diocese of Orange had reportedly paid $4,169,325 to settle lawsuits regarding sexual abuse allegedly perpetrated by Atherton.
