In 2003, a woman filed suit against the Fresno Diocese claiming she was sexually abused over the course of five years in the 1960s by Rev. James Collins while she attended St. Mary’s Church in Buttonwillow, California. The diocese eventually paid the woman $875,000 to settle the lawsuit. Collins also reportedly served as a priest at churches in Avenal and Lemoore, California.
