On January 2, 2019, the Diocese of Monterey released a list of 30 clergymen who have been “credibly accused” of sexually abusing children. Phillip Abinate was listed as a credibly accused priest not previously released to the public. The diocese acknowledged that it received reports of sexual abuse involving Abinate arising out of incidents in 1970, 1971, and 1975. Abinate died in June 2008.
