Sofronio A. Aranda

Born in the Philippines in 1937, Father Sofronio “Pon” Aranda was ordained in 1963 in the Archdiocese of Capiz. In 1976, he came to the Diocese of Orange for an indefinite stay in order to live closer to his mother while she was ill. Aranda served at Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Habra, CA, in the Diocese of Orange, as well as at parishes in Trona, CA, and Mecca, CA, in the Diocese of San Bernardino. In 1991, he served at the Soboba Indian Reservation in San Jacinto, CA. He eventually moved to Houston, TX, to serve as a chaplain at Ben Taub Hospital. As of 2005, the Diocese of Orange had reportedly paid $1.55 million to settle lawsuits regarding sexual abuse allegedly perpetrated by Aranda.
