On January 2, 2019, the Diocese of Monterey released a list of 30 clergymen who have been “credibly accused” of sexually abusing children. Juan Carlos Esquivel was listed as a credibly accused seminarian not previously released to the public. The diocese acknowledged that it received reports of sexual abuse involving Esquivel arising out of an incident in 2007.
