Jose Luis Urbina

Ordained: 1979

Jose Luis Urbina worked in the Diocese of Sacramento from 1979-1989. He was convicted after pleading guilty to the molestation of a young boy in 1989. Urbina allegedly abused the boy from the ages of 8-17, once at gunpoint. Before Urbina could be sentenced, he fled to his hometown in Mexico. Despite warnings from the Diocese of Sacramento about his behavior, his bishop in Mexico was not aware that he had been convicted of the crime, and he was not defrocked at that time. Urbina’s accuser brought a civil suit against the Diocese of Sacramento in 2003. In 2010, a court of appeals affirmed the dismissal of a lawsuit brought by the mother of two boys molested by Urbina against the Diocese of Sacramento due to the expiration of the statute of limitations. Her two sons brought suit against the diocese separately. Urbina is now considered laicized.
