Marcos Capistran Chavira
Ordained:
Marcos Capistran Chavira is among several priests accused of sexually molesting students at Palma Catholic School in Salinas, California. The abuse allegedly occurred in the 1970s and 1980s. In 2003, nine former students reached a settlement worth $18 million with the Irish Christian Brothers Catholic Order, of which many of the abusers were affiliated. The Diocese of Monterey ran the school, however, but escaped liability when then-governor Jerry Brown vetoed a California bill that would have extended the statute of limitations for civil claims arising from the sexual abuse of minors.
